You will be welcomed in a big colonial house with a typical decor. There are quite a few very nice ones, with better service and definitely nicer rooms and breakfast! Avoid MASAYA Santa Marta and if you go, don’t have breakfast there.Located in the Candelaria district, the historic center of Bogota, Masaya Hostels Bogotá is an immersion inside the Colombian culture. I absolutely urge you to try other hostels in Santa Marta. I’ve had some of the best breakfasts at best prices in Colombian hostels but Masaya Santa Marta was THE WORST. It was rude service and the price was insanely high for a hostel in Colombia. I got a super dry omelette, burned toasts and about a spoonful of jam for the whole thing… when I asked for more he told me no. However there was no buffet, only a rude man who told me that he conveniently was out of everything on the menu. I paid 36.000 COP (about 10$) for a ‘buffet’ breakfast.

All the rooms are stuffy, NO WINDOWS in any of them and the AC only works after some time. Still no windows tho (and that was the ‘nicest room’). The night receptionist was kind and he upgraded me to a slightly nicer room cause he could see I was sick (from the bus). Second, when I arrived at the hostel, I was showed to a stuffy room with a terrible smell, no windows and very VERY hot. As a solo female traveler I try to avoid having to take taxis alone at night in cities I’ve never been to before. Upon my arrival in Santa Marta at night NO ONE was waiting for me. Once I realized my bus was running late (always in Colombia), I called the reception to tell them. First, prior to my arrival by bus from Cartagena to Santa Marta I emailed the reception of the hotel to arrange a taxi pick up. I’ll start with the only 2 positives: the cute view from the top of the hotel and the nice reception staff… other than that this hostel is a scam and quite dangerous too.
